Sasan Gir Rail Safari Survey Conducted on Historic Meter-Gauge Track; Railway Team Inspects Five Key Stations

Sasan Gir Rail Safari: A new tourism initiative is taking shape in the forest region of Gir National Park as Western Railway has begun exploring plans to introduce the much-anticipated Sasan Gir Rail Safari. The project aims to transform a historic meter-gauge railway line passing through the Gir forest landscape into a unique railway-based wildlife tourism experience.

Officials from the Bhavnagar Railway Division recently carried out a detailed inspection of the route as part of a survey to evaluate the feasibility of launching the Sasan Gir Rail Safari. The inspection was led by Divisional Railway Manager Dinesh Verma, who visited several railway stations and examined track conditions along the historic meter-gauge corridor.

The proposed project, if approved, could provide tourists visiting the Gir region with an entirely new way to explore the area while also preserving an important piece of railway heritage.

Inspection Conducted Across Five Key Railway Stations

During the survey, the railway team carried out inspections across five important stations located along the meter-gauge line that runs through the Gir region. These stations include:

  • Savni
  • Talala Junction
  • Kansiyanesh
  • Sasan Gir
  • Visavadar

Among these locations, Sasan Gir Railway Station holds particular importance as it serves as a major gateway for visitors heading to the famous Gir forest. The inspection focused on evaluating the infrastructure, heritage value, and tourism potential of these stations as part of the proposed Sasan Gir Rail Safari route.

Railway officials also assessed the condition of the existing meter-gauge track that connects these stations. This historic railway line runs through scenic landscapes surrounding Gir, making it an attractive option for a railway-based safari experience.

Focus on Tourism Development Through Sasan Gir Rail Safari

The main objective of the inspection was to examine how the route could be developed into a tourism attraction while preserving its historical character. The Sasan Gir Rail Safari concept is designed to bring the railway corridor onto the tourism map and offer visitors a new perspective of the region.

During discussions with railway officials, DRM Dinesh Verma reviewed the heritage significance of the meter-gauge section and the possibilities for integrating tourism features along the route. The plan involves maintaining the traditional identity of stations such as Sasan Gir while introducing modern passenger amenities that would support the rail safari concept.

If implemented, the Sasan Gir Rail Safari could allow tourists to enjoy a slow-paced journey through the Gir region while experiencing the surrounding natural environment from a train, making it a distinctive alternative to traditional jeep safaris.

Review of Infrastructure, Safety, and Passenger Facilities

As part of the inspection, railway authorities also evaluated key operational aspects of the route. These included the track infrastructure, signaling systems, platform arrangements, and overall passenger facilities at the stations.

Officials emphasized that safety would remain the top priority in any future development under the Sasan Gir Rail Safari project. DRM Dinesh Verma instructed the concerned departments to ensure that all railway operations and future upgrades strictly follow established safety standards.

In addition to safety measures, railway authorities highlighted the need for maintaining high-quality infrastructure. Development work, if approved, would be carried out according to strict quality guidelines and completed within the required time frame.

Cleanliness and passenger convenience were also discussed during the inspection. Railway officials stressed that station premises must be kept clean and that passenger amenities should be continuously upgraded to improve the travel experience for visitors using the proposed Sasan Gir Rail Safari service.

Detailed Report to Be Submitted to Railway Board

According to Atul Kumar Tripathi, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Bhavnagar Division, the survey was conducted following instructions from higher railway authorities. The inspection specifically examined the Talala–Sasan–Kansiyanesh–Visavadar meter-gauge route to evaluate its potential for development as the Sasan Gir Rail Safari.

Tripathi confirmed that a comprehensive report based on the inspection findings will soon be submitted to the Railway Board and other senior railway officials. The report will include details regarding infrastructure, tourism potential, operational feasibility, and development requirements.

Once the Railway Board reviews the proposal and grants approval, authorities will announce further details regarding the format, launch timeline, and operational structure of the Sasan Gir Rail Safari.
