A major political development has unfolded in Bihar as Samrat Chaudhary has been chosen as the new Chief Minister of the state. The senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was first elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and later endorsed as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative group. With this decision, Bihar is set to witness its first Chief Minister from the BJP.
Following his election as the leader, Samrat Chaudhary visited the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and formally staked his claim to form the new government. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on April 15 at Lok Bhavan, where Chaudhary will officially take the oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister.
According to party sources, Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony, making the event a significant moment for the BJP and the NDA alliance in the state.
NDA Meeting Confirms Leadership
The decision was finalized during an NDA meeting held in the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar proposed Samrat Chaudhary’s name as the leader. In a symbolic gesture of unity and respect, Nitish Kumar welcomed Chaudhary by placing a garland around his neck. Chaudhary, in turn, sought Kumar’s blessings by touching his feet.
After being elected as the legislative party leader, Samrat Chaudhary addressed party members and expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. He said he had learned the nuances of politics while working alongside Nitish Kumar and hoped to carry forward the vision of a prosperous Bihar.
Nitish Kumar Submits Resignation
Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar stepped down from the post of Chief Minister. He arrived at Raj Bhavan along with Samrat Chaudhary and senior leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary and handed over his resignation to the governor.
After resigning, Nitish Kumar shared a message on social media platform X, stating that a new government would now take charge of the state’s administration. He assured full cooperation and guidance to the incoming leadership, expressing confidence that Bihar would continue to progress.

Nitish Kumar Reflects on His Tenure
During the final cabinet meeting, Nitish Kumar reflected on his long political journey. He reminded colleagues that he had assumed office in 2005 and had worked to the best of his ability for the development of Bihar. He added that while a new government would now take charge, he would continue to offer his guidance and support.
